How To Overcome Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Watch the video on YouTube

With our busy and ever-changing world, complete with 9-5 stress, expectations, both parents working, children left home alone, and even sometimes still “keeping up with the Joneses,” we can experience stress. Sometimes it can be quiet mild, and a hot bath can knock it right out. While other times that stress can up to anxiety and panic attacks, and that my friends, is not optimal living.

So… we are here to knock it out the park with some healthy natural remedies that will calm the body, and also ease the mind.

I personally experienced having anxiety and panic attacks for the first time in my life, over 5 years ago. Of course right in the midst of that starting, I decided to switch to 100% raw overnight. I know, I know, I’m a nutter. But guess what, it worked!

Here are some topics I cover in the video:

1. Top 5 things to avoid when dealing with anxiety

2. Herbal Remedies

  • Passionflower
  • Valerian
  • Rescue Remedy
  • Kava
  • 5-HTP

3. Aromatherapy

  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Rose

4. Physical Remedies

  • Progressive muscle relaxing
  • Deep Belly Breathing
  • Massage and bodywork
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Sex, intimacy
  • Warm bath

5. Mental Remedies

  • Accept uncertainty
  • Create a worry period
  • Questions worries – is it real?
  • And practical steps for self-examination

6. Personal Story

  • And I also share my story on how I overcome anxiety and panic attacks

Experiencing anxiety and panic attacks was one of the toughest growth experiences in my life. I felt totally incapacitated. And to top if off, you really can’t talk about it with anyone who has never experienced it, they just don’t understand. It’s one of those things you almost have to go through, in order to be able to help others in the end.

But, I guess that how it is with all things. After all, I am all about experiential knowledge, I mean you just don’t really know something in life unless you’ve walked in those shoes. Which is why I am grateful for being overweight for the first 30 years of my life, as now I know what I’m talking about not from book knowledge, but from experience, and can be a catalyst for change in others.

I believe this video is very timely, as I know we are all experiencing shifts as time progresses and things speed up a bit.

I encourage you to share this video with anyone you know you is suffering from anxiety, stress, or panic attacks. And please leave comments below so we can discuss additional methods that may have worked for you.

And please remember – You Are Strong. You Are Whole. You Are An Overcomer!

And I thoroughly and whole-hardheartedly Believe In You!

Hi Philip I would recommend EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques to add to your toolbox. It is simple and effective. Perhaps you want to check it or maybe you know about it already.

Great recommendation Kim, I have used it before and its awesome! Thanks :)

I do exactly what you do….except the raw diet, which I have tried and had a hard time sticking with. Have all your cookbooks, which I love and used extensively, and fell off the raw wagon! I can say I never felt better than when I ate raw and will return to it when I find the will to make that change again. It is not so easy in a cooked food world. regardless, I continue to appreciate your inspiration and feel joyful seeing your personal and professional growth, and will return again to what I know makes me feel best.

    Thank you.

Wow, wonderful comment Peggy, thanks for the reply. Glad to see that you are making a go of it. Let me know of any other future videos that might be able to help you along the way that I can make. Next one will be on cravings! :)

Just wanted to add a another natural treatment for anxiety as well as depression. If you do a google search for Niacin, you’ll be able to find a lot of information as to how it has helped many people over come anxiety, depression and even alcoholism. Typically prescribed is a dosage of roughly 3000mg, specifically the flush free formulas. I suffered from severe clinical depression from the ages 11-20, and have recently seen symptoms creep up again. What I realized is that I stopped taking niacin + flax seed oil about 3 months ago. I started taking them again, and my symptoms are beginning to normalize. If any of you out there are aware of the side-effects of psychotropic drugs you may want to give these a shot. And of course, please make sure you speak to your supervising doctor. Thankfully my Dr. was more than willing to try alternative therapies with me.

Great recommendation Edward, I have heard great things about doing a Niacin flush. Pretty full on experience. I’ll have to try it out!

    Philip,
Thanks for posting. So many great ideas to try and most of all thanks for reminding me there is a way to end this! You are right that no one can understand what you are going through unless they have experienced it. (They support you but they don’t know what is happening) I am curious (if you don’t mind sharing) which med were you on and how did you manage the taper off period. I am not on meds but it seems to be heavily pushed and the thought of even taking them creates more anxiety for me.

Thanks for the reply Anna. I actually don’t even remember, I think it started with a Z. It was only needed to keep me from going crazy at the time, then life leveled out very quickly and it was no longer used. Try some of the natural stuff first, I didn’t even know about that stuff at the time.

      • Anna

Planning on it for sure. So many great suggestions from everyone.

Hello Philip! I loved your idea for this video and how it was presented with an outline. Awesome job, you are always so intriguing to watch! I wanted to add to some of this, which might help your wonderful fan base. Vitamin B’s are wonderful especially B12 and Pantothenic Acid (B5) and Vitamin C which is needed for adrenal function and daily use of omegas. As far as additional herbs are : Rosemary, Sage and Basil (great for depression) which can be used daily in foods, cooked or raw. Another reason why panic attacks arise, come along from improper digestion. I think the CLEAN program by Dr. Alejandro Junger addresses the digestion, which is amazing and should be read by all medical doctors to help us all heal. I think a great video to make would be “How to deal with someone with a Panic Attack” Although we may know how to master ourselves, our loved ones worry and may downfall with us unless they know a safe protocol to follow that will allow both parties to get through it effectively without it spiraling. My hats off to you! And yes number one cure to Anxiety/ Panic is the breath and surrendering. One more thing that was suggested to me by a holistic practitioner, was to observe the panic attack and see what it would do next without judgement, so that you would recognize it’s pattern and become familiar with it. Comfort breeds familiarity. It helped me many times, when I remembered this technique. I realized observing it usually made it disappear.

    Dearest Philip,
As ever, your comments are both insightful and timely! What a BREATH of fresh, raw air ;) ! Thank you very much. I’ve found the work of Byron Katie very helpful, particularly in the midst of an anxiety attack, but first I have to slow enough to get there, which is where the breathing comes in. I favor the acronym for FEAR = false evidence appearing real, and use that as a springboard for inquiry – is this true? etc. I also remind myself to ground – if I can get barefoot on the grass somewhere = perfect! or just to sit quietly w/ my back up against a tree, visualizing deep roots and reminding myself that I am rooted and supported at every turn. Another interesting acronym is HALT, as in never get too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired, so checking in to see have I eaten? Is this reaching out I’m about to do healthy or is it based on loneliness? Am I being driven by some shoulds that really are not authentic for me (i.e. I should be dating)…I agree that sex is powerful medicine and a great antidote to anxiety and depression. When not with a partner, for me the next best thing is Bikram Yoga – the release of sweating, meditating, breathing and connecting can be a mirror (no pun intended, as the room is mirrored so you can keep an eye on your form. first i thought this was vanity based, i can be very judgmental! – but now I see its importance). On that note, I get to pay attention to when I’m judging and instantly dismissing/ruling things out that might be nurturing and/or supportive…Massage is a great counter to anxiety and depression and trying various styles is helpful too, I particularly enjoy receiving a thai massage which, to me, is like yoga, physical therapy, and massage combined! Time with children and pets is helpful too. I’ve heard just petting animals is an instant stress buster and I can believe it! Sometimes all I have to do is think of my dog’s happy faces and waggity tails and I’m uplifted! Lastly, you made reference to rose oil in particular being a bit pricey – however, I find rosewater (and jasmine, gardenia, and plumeria waters) spritzers to spray on my face/body to be a mood-changer too and more affordable. That’s all I’ve got for now. May we all love well and feel loved.
    Appreciatively,
    Lisa

Fantastic, what wonderful suggestions Lisa. Sounds like you’ve done some fantastic personal growth, kudos. Grounding is one of my favorites, especially in front of a fire, or the ocean. LOVE!

Philip! You are the MAN! : )
I do so adore you and truly you are my hero! I am finding it a little difficult to maintain the raw diet, one reason being the detox. I have health issues and it seems every time I go raw I get severe symptoms and then I am unable to support myself with what I am doing. So it’s easy to fall back into the old pattern. At least with that I know what to expect. (I am a self-supporting single mom experiencing funding cuts with my job)
I have all your stuff and I find a resonance with you as you are so loving and gentle. Non-judgmental! : ) I order with you as I am able to!
Maybe you could do a video on raw on a low income budget? Also, detoxing alone?
When you were detoxing, did you have a large support group? I live where very few ppl are even interested in raw. I must create the change I was to see! :)
Thank you for all you do! : )

Thank you for writing, and thanks for the great ideas. I will put them in queue for future videos for sure. When I went raw, I knew nobody. Zero support until after about a year. But, then I decided to get out, even drive a few hours if needed. Check out meetup.com for a raw group possibly near you. Blessings. :)

I think this is so great that you posted this. As you know I reached out to you when I went through this. I did find out by diagnosing myself that i had Hashimoto. It is an autoimmune discorder when antibodies attack your body and in me it attacked my thyroid. I went through 4 doctors who misdiagnosed me and wanted to given me meds for depression and anxiety. Thank God being a nurse helped me through to find the answer, I was simply in the hyper phase of the condition and that is what caused my weight loss to 109 and the panic attacks. I had even asked the doctors if it was my thyroid and they all said that it would not do that to me. Fast foward to now. I am much much better although I did go into hypothyroidism and ended up on synthroid med. But I am down to 1/3 of the dose and my thyroid numbers are stable. My goal is to get off it. I am staying about 90 raw and if I deviate from that I feels sick again. I also had a severe Vita D deficiency. I highly encourage anyone with anxiety to exhaust all possibilities of any physical conditoon before accepting the label they tried to tag me with. I also am very thankful for my knowledge of the raw foods. I was raw when I got this condition and for a while doubted my love of the raw/living foods having gotten so sick while on it. Soooo during that crucial time in my life I got off raw foods thinking everyone was right that the diet got me sick. This put my TSH from a 4 to a 16!!!! I am happy to say I went back to my love which is raw and brought it back to 3 and am almost off the meds. I want to personally thank you for your answer during my trying time and I will always remember you for that. You are a kind, smart, and giving person. I know that even if we have never met. I keep rooting for you and I always refer people to your site. When we have our raw pot lucks I always mention your site. Hugs and keep spreading the love. It’s all good again and I don’t take any moment for granted. Thanks again

What beautiful words Laura, I am honored, thank you. And fantastic job at getting to the bottom of it. Yes, there are so many options out there, and its important that we know them all so we can make choices from an empowered place.

I just wish there was a way to help another person through an attack but I have found that suggesting breathing etc… only worsens the situation and it’s best to just let them work through it how they can – hard when it’s your partner

  • http://twitter.com/MamaHarshman Mrs Wilson-Harshman

I should say hard when it is your partner AND YOU yourself are also a recovering control freak :)
